Introducing the Counting Principles

What is the difference between rote counting and rational counting?

At first, children just chant a sequence of number names that they previously heard. This is very procedural and it is not associated with any matching quantities. So this is what we call rote counting?

To count rationally, the children need to exhibit five distinct principles:

  • They must give each object they count just one number name.
  • They must say the number names in the conventional order.
  • They must know that the last number they say tells us the quantity in the group.
  • They must know they can count objects in any order.
  • And they must know what they can and cannot count.

Okay. So it seems that rational counting involves a much deeper understanding of quantities.
