Meaning of A BIT OF A STRETCH and STRETCH YOUR MONEY – A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

Understanding the Phrase « A Bit of a Stretch »

So in English when you say that something is a bit of a stretch, or when you say something is a stretch, it means that it is an exaggeration. A good example of this would be if you went fishing and you came home and you lied and told people that you caught 10 fish when you only caught seven, and that all of the fish weighed several kilograms, when in fact they were all quite small. That would be a bit of a stretch. It would mean that you are exaggerating, and you are not telling the whole truth. You are kind of stretching the truth. That’s another use of the word stretch. So, when you say it’s a bit of a stretch, you mean that it is a bit of an exaggeration.

Using « Stretch » in Relation to Money

We also use the word stretch when we’re talking about money. Sometimes when you don’t have a lot of money left, you have to stretch your money, or you have to stretch every dollar so that you can live till the end of the month. Sometimes you only have a little bit of money left. Maybe it’s already the 20th or the 25th of the month, and you don’t get paid until the end of the month. You will need to stretch your money. You will need to stretch every dollar so that you can make it to the end of the month and have enough money to buy food and to do the things that you want to do.

So, when you say something is a bit of a stretch, it means that it is an exaggeration. And when you say that you need to stretch your money or stretch every dollar, it means that you are going to budget your money so that you don’t spend too much of it.
